In this class we will explore the intersections between religion and medicine and how these intersections affected the treatment of and attitudes toward the animal (both human and non-human) body as a physical entity and as a source of ritual power and symbolic meanings in the ancient and late antique world. Cultural regions in which such questions will be examined include: ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Iran, Greece and the Roman empire. The religious traditions of these regions will be touched upon primarily as they related to views and uses of the body and healing, and will include, but not be exclusive to, early Judaism and Christianity. Course conducted in English. Written assignments may be in English, German or another language with consent of the professor.
