This seminar examines the position of Islam and Muslim communities within contemporary secularized European societies, a relationship that has been the subject of sustained public, political, and scholarly debate. Following a brief overview of the historical presence of Islam in Europe, the course explores how past and ongoing encounters shape the contemporary social, political, and religious positioning of Muslims across diverse European contexts. Attention is given to the formulation of diaspora within contemporary Muslim theological thought; the transformation of religious traditions under conditions of globalization; the institutional and political challenges faced by Muslim communities and individuals in Europe; and the ways in which Muslims negotiate recognition and belonging through popular culture, dress practices, and media engagement.
