This in-person seminar forms part II of module A2 in the first semester of the master’s programme SEOS. Complementing the fundamentals of part I, this seminar familiarises students specifically with inclusive research methods and participatory research, as well as addressing digital approaches.
The module A2 “Diversity-sensitive research, teaching and learning methods“ introduces in part I the principles of academic research, the interpretation of studies and data, and the writing of academic papers. In addition, possible sources of errors in empirical studies, like discriminatory unconscious bias based on prejudice as well as ethical concerns in research, are addressed to give an overview of diversity-sensitive academic working aspects. In part II, barriers to researching, teaching, and learning are discussed in greater detail. Inclusive methods are jointly acquired and developed, with a particular focus on participatory research and digital (hybrid) strategies. Students will also be introduced to debates on methodologies sensitive to social differences and discrimination. The CityLab methodology as a means of engaged research and learning, together with stakeholders from different urban contexts, will be covered. Students acquire knowledge on how to prepare and implement diversity-sensitive and participatory principles in their work while reflecting on existing power structures.
Prerequisites: All students participating in the module are enrolled as master students in the SEOS programme.
Requirement for the award of credit points for module A2, part II: Participation in the two courses and active engagement in class; successful completion of tasks and presentations, term paper/ diversity-sensible teaching concept or another equivalent exercise.
