The relationship between religion and modernity and the nature of religion in modernity have been central issues in religious studies since its inception. Focusing on Germany, the Middle East and the USA as three regional examples, the lecture explores different theoretical and systematic approaches to the role and transformation of religious traditions in the modern period, extending from the late 18th century to the present. Students will be introduced to conceptions of modernity as project and as structure, to the idea of ‘postmodernity’ as well as to overarching paradigms and important concepts in the sociology of religion, including, secularization, spirituality, fundamentalism and the intersections of religion and the economy.
