This seminar will introduce students to adaptation to climate change in the Global South. The focus will be on recent innovations, such as anticipatory humanitarian aid delivered to households in the context of extreme weather events and parametric weather insurance for farm households. Taking an applied micro-economic perspective, we will discuss how economic research can evaluate the effectiveness of climate adaptation instruments with quantitative methods. Various study designs will be introduced, including quasi-experimental methods and randomized controlled trials, and their strengths and limitations will be compared. Students will read and discuss selected peer-reviewed journal articles in economics on climate adaptation.
