This class provides an overview of the development in concepts of the messiah in Judaism, starting with Biblical texts and continuing through to the present day.  We will examine specific messianic movements and messianic figures and how these fit within the broader religious and political contexts from which they sprang.  Included in this course will be an examination of how Jerusalem and the “holy land” fits within the messianic conception of various Jewish communities .  We will touch on the relationship of other communities’ messianic beliefs to those of Jews, however, the primary focus of the course will be on messianism in different forms of Judaism over the ages. Class is taught in English. Students may write papers and homework assignments in English, German, or another language with prior consent of the professor.
