In recent years, East Asia as a region and the countries that are generally located within it have increasingly become the centre of political, economic and social discussions. The economic developments of the so-called tiger economies, (de)democratisation, the PISA study, ageing societies, the US-China rivalry and the Indo-Pacific region are just some of the buzzwords that one encounters frequently. In this seminar, we will focus on topics and questions that are currently being discussed in relation to the East Asian region. After an introduction to the region and a joint discussion of relevant aspects, we will focus in particular on cross-cutting issues such as globalisation, regionalisation, connectivity, trade relations, political transformation, security and geopolitical challenges. To this end, we will make use of various theoretical analytical approaches and thus broaden and deepen our understanding of internal and external perspectives on East Asia on the basis of secondary literature and, where possible, primary sources.
