Intermedial Transpositions of Architecture  A2, V2 

What are the medial specificities of architecture, specifically of the Gothic cathedral? How is it possible to represent the 3-dimensional architectural space, as well as the sounds, feel, and age of a medieval edifice verbally, visually, or acoustically?  In this seminar we will analyze representations of Gothic architecture in word, image, and music, against a theoretical background of representation, intermedial transposition, and ekphrasis.

Students are expected to complete the required readings (in the original, or in German or English translation) and be prepared to actively discuss them in class. Additionally, students will present a short analysis of an architectural representation in a medium of their choice. Discussion will be in English, and term papers may be written in English or in German. Regular attendance is encouraged.

Selected short passages from, for example, Goethe, Schlegel, Tieck, Gautier, Hugo, Morris, Ruskin, Zola, Huysmans, Proust, Auguste Rodin, Rilke, Henry Adams, Raymond Chandler, Eco, and Ken Follett will be studied. Relevant artworks will be discussed, as well as a short film by Jacek Dukaj, and musical compositions by Satie and Debussy. Secondary literature by W.J.T Mitchell, Norman Bryson, Claus Clüver, Peter Kivy, Ruth Web, and Tamar Jacobi will be provided by the instructor.
