• Panel 1: Global Governance, De-globalization and the Role of the EU and East Asia

      Prof. Dr. Sebastian Bersick holds the Jean Monnet Chair of International Political Economy of EU-Asia Relations and heads the department for International Political Economy of East Asia at the Faculty of East Asian Studies at Ruhr-University Bochum. He is adjunct professor at the school of International Relations and Public Affairs (SIRPA) at Fudan University, Shanghai, China and is visiting professor at the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur.

      His research focuses on the international political economy of Asia-Europe relations, especially EU-China, EU-ASEAN and ASEM as well as East Asian integration and China as a regional and global actor.

      Shada Islam is director of Europe and Geopolitics at Friends of Europe, Brussels, an independent think-tank that works for a more inclusive, sustainable and forward-looking Europe (https://www.friendsofeurope.org). She is closely involved with initiatives to promote exchanges between Asia and Europe including ASEM. 

      Ms Islam has a special responsibility for the Asia Programme and for the Development Policy Forum at Friends of Europe. She talks about the relationship between the European Union and Asia and is a leading commentator, analyst and writer in this domain.

      Prof. Dr. Werner Pascha holds the Chair for East Asian Economic Studies/Japan and Korea at University Duisburg Essen. His research focuses on the economic transformation in Japan and Korea as well as the international economic relations within and with the East-Asian region. 

      In his presentation Prof. Dr. Pascha discusses the question of whether or not globalization has a future.

      Dr. rer. pol. Hanns Günther Hilpert is director of the research division Asia at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) in Berlin. 

      Among others, his areas of expertise include China and East Asia, foreign trade policy and international monetary policy as well as weapons of mass destruction/proliferation. Starting from a theoretical point of view, he speaks about the problems about global governance and de-globalisation as well as policy aspects. Dr. Hilpert contributes on research on economic relations between Europe and Asia and north Korea.

      Prof. Chen Yugang teaches international studies at the school of International Relations and Public Affairs (SIRPA) and is director of the Research Management Office for Humanities and Social Sciences at Fudan University, Shanghai, China (http://www.sirpa-en.fudan.edu.cn/main.htm). 

      His courses focus for example on international relations and global governance as well as the international system and Chinese diplomacy.
