The learning objective of the course is to gain an understanding of interdisciplinary perspectives on concepts, approaches and methods, and implications for planning and decision-making of ecosystem services (ES) with a focus on urban areas. The course will expose students to the state of knowledge of research and practice around planning for ES in cities and actively engage them in discussions about current literature and emerging ideas. In addition, students will gain experience in reading and understanding scientific journal articles as well as collaborative work in small and large groups. Of note, the course is designed to prepare students for the empirical application of "Development concepts and project management" that will occur during the upcoming Summer Semester in 2024.

The course is divided into four main parts and offers a balanced mix of theoretical concepts and practical applications. Several examples from Bochum offer students a valuable context to understand how ES can be integrated into urban planning, also in view of their empirical study in SoSe 2024.
Part 1: ES definitions, concepts, and methods:
Part 2: Case study applications of ES in urban context (Bochum examples):
Part 3: Challenges and Opportunities in Integrating ES:
Part 4: Student Presentations and Reflection:
