This course draws on research in game studies and sound studies to look not only at sound in games (namely, soundtracks and sound effects) but also the gamification of music and other sound production, as well as the remediation of video game sounds in popular music more generally. In a cultural and collaborative sense, where do the practices of engineers, programmers, and musicians intersect? When musicians reappropriate game consoles to create music, how do the simultaneous limitations and possibilities of the hardware influence how the music sounds? Additionally, how do the power relations around hardware influence the behavior of consumers and corporations? This course will include foundational texts in the media of sound (re)production. We will then move to more recent texts on game studies and sound studies, including case studies of games or game consoles and their sonic attributes.
