The seminar examines varying ways to think about the visitor, and presents challenges that museums today face in regard with providing access to diverse publics, forming meaningful and rich learning experiences, and engaging their audiences. What do people when they visit museums, and how their practices are connected to learning? We will focus on visitors’ behavior and motivation, possible barriers to engagement and learning, as well as participatory practices adopted by museums. Through reading and discussing texts, as well as analysing empirical cases, we will come to a better understanding of how learning in embedded in social processes in museums and how research and evaluation can inform museum activities.
