Labor markets have transformed profoundly over the last decades, and overarching developments such as globalisation, digitalisation, the rise of the knowledge economy or of ‘platform capitalism’ suggest a convergence in the organisation of work and employment in different countries. Yet, in different settings distinct patterns can be observed of how people are prepared for and allocated to jobs, how achievement is evaluated and careers are shaped, how social risks are dealt with, or in which conflicts at work are solved. This course provides empirical insights into different labor market regimes and their institutional set-up (e.g. in education and training, social policy, industrial relations). It invites for a reflection of the merit and limits of different theoretical perspectives in understanding cross-country differences and similarities, and transnationalisation in the sphere of work.
