This interdisciplinary course module encompasses the fields of rock mechanics, structural geology, seismology and petroleum engineering to provide a background to tackle a range of geomechanical problems associated with rock failure, fault formation, and fluid injection and/or extraction in wells. It will give an introduction to the world reservoir geomechanics, including an introduction to stress, strain, stress surrounding a well bore, and fluid interactions in and around wells and faults.  The course will start with the fundamentals of continuum mechanics, including stress and strain fields as well as constitutive laws, fundamentals of poroelastic theory, followed by rock failure, faulting and fluid flow, wellbore stability and failure in wells.  Class meetings will be weekly meetings of three hours, with 1.5 hours devoted to lecture and 1.5 hours devoted to assignments that are largely computer based.
