Social and Political History of Taiwan in the Twentieth Century (090101-SS 2021)

This course introduces key issues in the social and political history of Taiwan in the twentieth century, aiming at assisting students in understanding Taiwan and her past from a historical angle. Having evolved from significant political power transfers, modernisation, ethnic and national identity struggle, and pursuit of rights, ideals and democracy, Taiwan society has been deeply influenced by the resulting social changes even today. The purpose of this course is to stimulate students to better understand Taiwan in the position of a key pacific island in modern world history. The course comprises lectures and discussion of assigned readings, translation and students’ presentations.
