The course provides an overview of X-ray spectroscopy techniques for the study of the electronic properties at surfaces and interfaces, with particular focus on those relevant for energy conversion applications (photovoltaic, photoelectrochemical and heterogeneous catalysis systems). Covered topics include the generation of X-rays at synchrotron accelerator and X-ray free electron laser facilities, the interactions of X-rays with matter, the principles and implementation of core-level X-ray spectroscopy techniques (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray emission spectroscopy), as well as an overview of complementary spectroscopic and scattering methods (e.g. Raman, nuclear magnetic resonance, optical spectroscopy etc) for the study of the band structure and the lattice dynamics (phonon properties) of surfaces and interfaces.
