Renaissance Sonneteering: Sidney, Spenser, Shakespeare

Do 10-12

In this class we will engage in a close reading of love sonnets produced by the three most outstanding and influential poets of the Elizabethan Age, namely Sir Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser and William Shakespeare. The aim is to gain a deeper understanding of the creative possibilities inherent in the form of the sonnet. Much attention will be given to the treatment of love and, in particular, the traditions and socio-cultural factors that determined and fostered the fashion of sonneteering.

Texts will be made available on Moodle.
