The English Renaissance was a heyday of amatory poetry. In class, we will read love poems by Sir Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser, William Shakespeare, Michael Drayton, Lady Mary Wroth, John Donne, Robert Herrick, Abraham Cowley and Andrew Marvell. This means that we will explore Elizabethan sonneteering and the love lyrics produced by metaphysical poets. Two case studies will give deeper insights into the cultural conditions which determined and fostered this poetry.
A reader will be made available at the beginning of term.
