Introductory lecture series Superdiversity

Module A1, part I / H. Terhart and C. Katzenberg (with guest lecturers from partner universities)

This online lecture series introduces the concept of superdiversity and its dimensions of difference and discrimination. It familiarises students with the researchers and partner universities involved in SEOS. The series is complemented by an accompanying in-person tutorial. Together, they form part of module A1, part I.

This introductory module A1 provides an overview of superdiversity, exploring the key theories in this field. Part I discusses the various dimensions of superdiversity, as well as the associated challenges and opportunities. It raises questions regarding various forms of discrimination, such as those based on race, gender, and global inequalities. The concept of intersectionality will also be examined. Part II discusses the social inclusion of marginalised groups in superdiverse societies, influenced by factors such as social inequality, coloniality, and climate change/climate justice. Using specific examples, the lecturers will explain how power structures influence the emergence of discriminatory discourse and practices affecting different social groups in an intersectional manner.
