Jealousy, favoritism, and struggles for position and power are tales as old as time. The opening stories of the Hebrew Bible, found in Genesis, are filled with such stories of sibling rivalry and complex family dynamics from the very first family formed by Adam and Eve to the lengthy tale of Joseph and his brothers. These stories serve as a background for narratives found in the rest of the Bible and introduce themes which, to this day, remain relevant points of tension in society. This seminar will examine the formation and stories of Genesis, with a particular focus on its representation of family in the ancient world.
