This course introduces students to the basics of modern English linguistics, with a focus on the areas of morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Students will be introduced the terminology and methods used in modern linguistics and learn to describe English words and sentences scientifically. They acquire knowledge about the functions of language, the history of English and fundamentals of sign and communication theory. Emphasis is laid on the practical application of terminology and methods through discussing authentic examples of English language productions.
