Seventeenth-century English poetry offers an impressive range of trends, themes and poetic forms. It is much concerned with love, matters of faith, the celebration of social values and personal merits. Particularly remarkable is the formal sophistication of the poems, the verbal ingenuity and the use of imagery. In class, we will engage in a close reading of well-known poems by Ben Jonson, Emilia Lanier, John Donne, Abraham Cowley, John Milton, Richard Lovelace, Andrew Marvell, John Denham and Edmund Waller. The central concerns of the poems will be discussed in the light of the political upheavals and socio-cultural transformations of the time.
