This seminar is aimed at second-year students of Arabic and Islamic Studies, but it can also be attended by those with no prior knowledge of the subject. The seminar provides an introduction to the history of the Middle East. At the same time, we practise the interpretation of various primary sources (texts, images, audiovisual sources) as well as techniques of academic writing.

Major processes in the history of the Middle East (e.g. the Ottoman conquest of the Arab provinces, new intellectual currents, 19th century reforms, colonialism, the establishment of nation states) are analysed in terms of their consequences in different local contexts. The focus is on the biographies of individual people who shaped the development of the region, as well as on texts, images and monuments that have become lieux de mémoire (“sites of memory”) in the collective memory of specific communities.
