The first two decades of the 20th century were marked by upheaval and change in Eastern European cultures. In the literature and art of the Russian Empire and the early Soviet Union following the Revolution, specific movements emerged in response to the novelty of the time, featuring revolutionary concepts.

Offered in collaboration with the Institutes of Art History and Slavic Studies, this interdisciplinary seminar will focus on visual arts and literature, with a specific emphasis on the literary analysis of manifestos from various movements. Participants will gain familiarity with key movements of Modernism and the Russian Avantgarde, such as Suprematism and Constructivism, through the comparative analysis of various media forms, including painting, literature, photography, posters, and drawings.
