The seminar uses case studies to highlight ‘gender’ as a cross-sectional category that is relevant to numerous areas of Islamic Studies. Focal points of the discussion are (1) concepts of gender orders in law and ethics and (2) studies of gender relations in concrete social contexts, past and present.

Course organisation:

All course materials will be provided online via Moodle. Participation requires completion of the 'Arabic IV' course or equivalent Arabic skills. Please note that the entire communication in this course will be in English.

The requirements for active participation (4 CP) are: an oral presentation with handout and a 5-page essay (usually based on the presentation). In addition, each participant will be asked to give a 5-minute introduction to a concept or a seminal publication in the field (ideally with a handout containing a table of contents and citations of key passages).
The requirements for full credit (8 CP) are: active participation and a term paper (Hauptseminararbeit) of approx. 6,000 words.
