This class is the continuation of the introduction to modern standard Arabic for reading knowledge which was offered in the previous semester. Students wishing to take this class should have successfully completed Introductory Modern Standard Arabic for Reading Knowledge Part 1.  Those who have not done so but wish to take the class should have some previous training in Arabic and review the first 15 chapters of grammar from Elementary Modern Standard Arabic Part 1, ed. Peter Abboud and Ernest McCarus (Cambridge University Press) – available on Moodle for this class -  to ensure that they have a firm command of the grammatical points and vocabulary contained in these chapters. During this semester we will complete chapters 16-30 of the same book. This class, its predecessor, and Intermediate Modern Standard Arabic, which will be offered the following year, are designed to begin prepare students in CERES who are unable to take the regular Arabic classes in the Islamic Studies program, to read classical and modern texts in Arabic. Students in CERES who do know German at a high level are strongly encouraged to take Arabic in the Islamic Studies program rather than the current course. While students will be provided with links and exercises where they might work on aural comprehension, and spoken Arabic, I will NOT be teaching spoken Arabic in this class.  This class will meet for 4 hours on Fridays.  The work for this course will consist of substantial weekly homework in the form of grammar and vocabulary exercises and memorization, periodic composition in Arabic and regular quizzes/tests.
