Wie keine andere Quellengattung ermöglichen dokumentarische Texte auf Papyrus oder Tonscherben (Ostraka) Einblicke in das Alltagsleben der Antike. Die überwiegend auf Griechische verfassten Texte auf diesen Schriftträgern stellen wertvolle Quellen zur Erforschung ökonomischer Fragen darf, beleuchten dabei gleichzeitig aber auch eine Vielzahl sozialer Aspekte. Über 70.000 bislang publizierte lassen sich für vielfältige Fragestellungen nutzbar machen. Im Rahmen der Übung wird diese Materialgruppe ausführlich vorgestellt und ausgewählte Texte vor dem Hintergrund der griechisch-römischen Lebenswelt in ihren historischen und kulturellen Kontext eingeordnet.

More than any other source type, documentary texts on papyrus or pot-sherds (ostraka) provide insights into the everyday life of the ancient world. These texts, predominantly written in Greek, are valuable sources for investigating economic questions, but can also shed light on a variety of social aspects. More than 70,000 documents published so far can be used to address a broad variety of research questions. In the context of this course, this type of sources will be presented in detail and selected texts will be placed within their contemporary historical and cultural context.
