The philosopher and theologian, John D. Caputo, is usually referenced with respect to his later work, which involved a ground-breaking religious interpretation of Jacques Derrida’s philosophy of deconstruction. This then led to his more recent contributions in an exciting field known as ‘Radical Theology.’ However, what is often forgotten, is that without Caputo’s earlier work in hermeneutics, or what he called ‘radical hermeneutics,’ his later work would not have been made possible. In this seminar, we will read Caputo’s highly influential, as well as controversial book, “Radical Hermeneutics” (1987); where he defends the project of hermeneutics as an interpretation of life that ‘returns life to its original difficulty.’

This seminar will be conducted in English
