Learning Content and Outline
Motivation
To reach climate neutrality, the transport sector will need to decarbonize. While
battery-electric vehicles might solve most use cases (e.g. personal
transport, last mile delivery etc.), some applications like aviation,
maritime or long distance trucking will need other technologies.
Considering this, there is the need to explore what role alternative
fuels (e.g. biofuels or power to liquid fuels.) can play in the
transformation of the transportation sector.
Especially
for biofuels extensive amounts of biomass are needed. It is highly
uncertain which biomass can be used and to which extent. A supply chain optimization should account for these uncertainties.
Learning Goals
In
this case study, we will explore the potential of biofuels as a
renewable energy source under uncertain biomass supply and uncertain demand. We will take an existing model for the supply chain and extend it to account for uncertainties.
Specifically, we will cover the following topics:
- Understanding complex biofuel supply chain model.
- Extending it for stochastic uncertainties.
- Understanding the value of the extension and accessing the cost of the uncertainties.
