Learning Content and Outline
Motivation
To reach climate neutrality, the transport sector will need to decarbonize. While battery-electric vehicles might solve most use cases (e.g. personal transport, last mile delivery etc.), some applications like aviation, maritime or long distance trucking will need other technologies. Considering this, there is the need to explore what role alternative fuels (e.g. biofuels or power to liquid fuels.) can play in the transformation of the transportation sector.
Learning Goals
In this case study, we will explore the potential of biofuels as a renewable energy source and analyse the challenges and opportunities in designing a sustainable and economically viable biofuel supply chain. We will focus on the modelling and optimization of the supply chain, taking into account the key factors that affect the economic viability and land-use.
Specifically, we will cover the following topics:
- Data handling and analysis: collecting, processing, and interpreting relevant data.
- Modelling a biofuel supply chain: identifying key variables and constraints, and developing an optimization model.
- Pareto-efficient solutions: balancing land use change and economic target functions, and identifying Pareto-efficient solutions.
- Visualizing problems and solutions.
