Between Returning, Staying and Moving On – Comparing Forced Migration in 4 Transit Countries

Due to armed conflicts, authoritarian regimes and impacts of climate change forced migration is increasing worldwide. Most people who have to leave their country stay in neighboring states and in the so-called Global South. Most of them feel themselves in the limbo between returning, staying and moving on to another country. Taking Syria as an example, almost 6 million Syrians had to flee the country, and nearly 13 million Syrians as internally displaced persons or persons in need of humanitarian and protection assistance inside Syria (https://www.eeas.europa.eu/eeas/situation-syrian-refugees-neighbouring-countries-challenges-opportunities-and-ways-forward_en).

In the module we will address the situation of forced migrants in four of the most important transit countries of forced migrants (Jordan and Turkey, Colombia and Mexico). Based on data of an international research project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) the participants will learn about (1) the general situation of forced migration, (2) the specific context in each of the 4 transit countries and 6 countries of origin, (3) the general design and organization of the research project, (4) the qualitative data of interviews with experts and forced migrants, and (5) the quantitative survey data of more than 1.200 interviewed forced migrants.

During the 2 semesters the participants will have the opportunity to specialize in one of the 4 transit countries and one of the data sources and corresponding methods of analysis.
