The current economic system encourages behavior that is not sustainable in the long term. Environmental problems are externalized, which leads to the destruction of ecosystems that support human life and well-being. Rising inequality and the concentration of assets and power undermine social cohesion and foster societal conflict. Nevertheless, as the saying goes, "it is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism." Achieving a sustainable economy requires fundamental societal transitions, which will probably include major changes to the economic system.

In this module, you will learn how to imagine a sustainable economy, which is a prerequisite for societal transformations that can prevent social and ecological collapse. We will discuss the concept of futures literacy and how ideas lead to societal change. You will also learn about the crisis of imagination and how to overcome it to make change possible. We introduce utopian thinking and storytelling as useful tools for change.
