The seminar explores how the European Union and its member states are driving the shift toward renewable energy. With the European Green Deal and REPowerEU at the center of the EU’s climate and energy strategy, this seminar examines the policy tools used to support the energy transition, including subsidies, feed-in tariffs, carbon pricing, regulatory reforms, and investment mechanisms. Through a comparative policy analysis approach, students will study how different EU countries have implemented these instruments and which strategies have proven most effective. Case studies from leading and lagging member states will highlight diverse national contexts, political dynamics, and institutional capacities that shape policy outcomes. The seminar also considers the role of governance structures, EU coordination mechanisms, and stakeholder involvement in shaping national transitions. Students will engage with current policy debates, assess the impact of EU-level directives, and critically reflect on the challenges of aligning national actions with collective EU climate goals. By the end of the course, students will be equipped to analyze complex policy environments and understand the political, economic, and social dimensions of Europe's transition to renewable energy. The seminar combines theoretical frameworks with real-world policy evaluation.
