Cultural Heritage has become an important category in the international debate around the value of cultural artifacts and practices, and religious aspects of heritage play a central role in debates around ownership, access, and appropriate contextualization. Questions of restoration are often also associated with the value of certain objects for concrete religious communities or practices.

But what makes something “heritage?” Whose heritage? Is there something like “world heritage?” And what is the place of religious concepts in international regulations around cultural heritage?

This seminar will engage with international and local attempts at regulating heritage, and the role religious communities, beliefs, and practices play in concepts of heritage. Looking at concrete case studies, the seminar will identify communities and organizations involved in defining heritage. Finally, the role of cultural heritage digitization will be discussed, taking into account questions of authenticity, access, and (re-)presentation.
