This course examines the complex relationship between religion and nationalism across different geographical regions, religious traditions, and historical periods. It investigates how religion has been employed to construct national identities, legitimize political power, and mobilize social movements, as well as the tensions and conflicts that arise in these processes. Students will engage with interdisciplinary scholarship, case studies, and theoretical frameworks to develop a nuanced understanding of key approaches to the study of religion and nationalism as well as to critically assess the role of religion in nation-building, identity formation, and political mobilization.
