“So act that you use humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, always at the
same time as an end, never merely as a means.” (Kant, Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals 4:429)
Recent literature on Kantian ethics focuses on the application of his moral and political philosophy to
urgent issues of our time. In the colloquium international experts will present their latest research on
global challenges like poverty, migration, climate change and racism from a Kantian perspective and
discuss their work with students. The seminar is in a hybrid format: while students and organizers will
attend in person, invited speakers from abroad will present their texts via Zoom.
The course presupposes active participation and preparation before the sessions. Students are required to
select three texts from the workshop presentations and prepare questions and comments in advance that
they will present after the invited talks. In addition to colloquium presentations, students are required to
write a 10-15 pages final paper on a topic relevant to the course, or to take a final oral exam.
