The objective of this course is to provide students with a novice-level proficiency in understanding and translating Sanskrit, with the ultimate aim of giving students access to one of Classical India's primary languages for the composition of religious, poetic, and philosophical texts. This course will supply students with a basic introduction to Sanskrit grammar, building their ability to read texts in Classic and Epic Sanskrit with the aid of a dictionary. The course is also designed to introduce students to the history of Sanskrit literature and to the socio-cultural development of the language from the Vedic period to modern times. By the end of the course, students will be able to work comfortably with Nāgarī script and will be prepared to take on the translation of texts at the intermediate level in future Sanskrit courses. The main textbooks for this course will be Robert Goldman’s Devavāṇīpraveśikā and A. M. Ruppel's Cambridge Introduction to Sanskrit, with
additional learning material being provided as handouts.
