Master's course "Human Aspects of Cryptography Adoption and Use" at the chair of Human-Centred Security (HCS) winter semester 2024/2025.
Content:
The aim of the lecture is to examine the reasons why cryptographic solutions – which experts agree offer good protection against most of the common attacks today – are not adopted by most individuals and organizations, and why end-users, developers and system administrators who do use cryptographic solutions in some form frequently make mistakes that undermine the security protection. We cover a broad range of topics like human capabilities and limits, Mental Models, Usable Security, End-to-End Encryption in Chat Apps, Standards Development, and more.
