Welcome to the lecture course on Cosmology at the Ruhr University Bochum in the winter semester 2023/2024!

This course is based on the cosmology lecture by Prof. Peter Schneider from the University of Bonn. Prof Hendrik Hildebrandt taught this class together with him for five consecutive years (winter semesters 2014-2018), and deemed it to be such a well-designed lecture that he decided to also teach it here in Bochum. Peter Schneider kindly agreed to allow us to use his excellent lecture notes (see password below) and slides, which Prof Hildebrandt augmented by his own notes and slides.

In Winter Semester 23/24, the lecture will be taught by Dr Angus H Wright (me!). I will be utilising the excellent materials prepared by Profs Schneider and Hildebrandt, as well as adding my own materials to customise the course further (and to make the materials match more closely with my particular lecture style). 

As you might have noticed, the language of this class is English. This is primarily because Cosmology is a very international field and basically all the literature is in English. Prof Hildebrandt also believes it to be very important for students to get used to the daily interactions in English as early as possible in their university lives. Hence the decision to hold the lecture and exercises in English. This motivation is supplemented in WS23/24 by an equally important motivating factor: Dr Wright has an exceptionally average grasp of the German language. 

The lecture course will be accompanied by weekly exercises (time slot on Monday afternoons) that are led by your tutor Anna Wittje. You will be able to collect the exercise sheets after the lecture and you are expected to solve the exercises before the weekly meetings.

In previous semesters that were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, the lecture was given in hybrid format. So there are videos available, which you can revert to if you miss a date. However, the lecture in WS 23/24 will again be held in for 3h each week. So the videos do not contain everything! You are  certainly encouraged strongly to attend the classes in person, and to engage in lively discussions with your fellow students and myself!

We will offer oral exams at the end of the semester which can be taken in either German or English.
