How do we study Religion in a digital age? Digitization as a socio-technical process transforms both the object of our study and the means of our studies themselves. Regardless of whether we study contemporary religion—which is both affected by and making use of digital technologies—or religious history, mass digitization and the emergence of new data-driven methodologies change the working methods of scholars of religion.

In this seminar, we look at case studies from a broad range of scholarship on religion which leverages digital methodologies in some form or shape. By studying how scholars make use of technology and how this shapes their work, we will try to understand the potential, but also the challenges of digital methods and develop a sense of the changes that the field experiences.
