This course forms part of the Jean Monnet Chair for “The International Political Economy of EU- Asia Relations” and is supported by the European Union.
The course is designed to introduce and analyse the multidimensional relations between the European Union and East Asia. East Asia will be defined as consisting of th e subregions Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia. The course will begin with a discussion of major theoretical perspectives and approaches to the study of the EU's external relations with the region and its many actors, foll owed by a critical discussion of the evolution of the EU's approach to Asia. We will then focus on the EU's bilateral relations and the so called strategic partnerships in East Asia (PR China, Japan, Republic of Korea) before turning to the specific role of multilateral regional and interregional organizations and institutions (ASEAN, ARF, ASEM). The importance of cooperation in policy areas like trade, investment, security and climate will then be dealt with as well as the EU's perceptions of East Asia and their impact on EU policy making.
