Compact course "Laser and Optics" in WiSe2024/25 (4 SWS / 5 CP) is a block course during the semester break within two weeks (24.02-07.03.2025, from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm) and a seminar (11.03.2025, 9 am to 4 pm). The course includes lectures/exercises in the morning and practical lab work in the afternoon.

Topics for the lectures and exercises are laser, polarization, Fourier transformation, spectroscopy, basic optics, Gaussian optics, and nonlinear optics. The lab work focuses on the handling and measurements of four systems: beam alignment, interferometer, polarization, and spectrometer. Students work in 3 groups of max. 4 students during the lab work and seminar. Participation in all events is mandatory!

Examination has two parts, each accounts for 50% of the overall grade, both have to be passed in order to pass the course:
  1. Group’s presentation about one of the experimental systems at the seminar, 15 mins per student consecutively and 20 mins for questions and discussion.
  2. Lab report about the lab work of an assigned experimental system, submitted latest on 25.03.2025 by PDF file per email to Dr. Claudius Hoberg (claudius.hoberg@rub.de).

Registration by email to Dr. Trung Quan Luong (trung.luong@rub.de) latest on 31.10.2024. The number of participants is limited to max. 12 students. Information for registration: Full name, RUB email address, matriculation number, course program (BSc/MSc/PhD), specialty (Chemistry/Biochemistry/…), and institution (RUB/MPI/…).
