This course deals with the investigation of biological phenomena with molecular methods. Emphasis will be placed on solving biological problems with chemical methods, which will ultimately lead to medicinal chemistry and drug design.

The lecture will be structured into individual case studies and will be largely based on the book "Concepts and Case Studies in Chemical Biology" (H. Waldmann, P. Janning, Editors). This book can be accessed from the Ruhr University network at the following URL:

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/book/10.1002/9783527687503

One chapter corresponds to about one two-hour lecture. In addition, there are weekly exercise questions and, if needed, supplementary lectures on special topics.

Other interesting textbooks are:

•          Richard B. Silverman, Mark W. Holladay: The Organic Chemistry of Drug Design and Drug Action, Elsevier 2014

•          Gerhard Klebe: Drug Design: Methodology, Concepts, and Mode-of-Action

In addition, current publications will be used in the scope of the lecture.
