Petroleum Geology I (Winter term, part 1 of 3 building Module Economic Geology I)

Building blocks of Petroleum Systems, i.e., (1) stratal elements (source rock, reservoir rock, seal rock, overburden) and (2) processes controlling a petroleum system (burial, trap structuration, generation/migration/accumulation of Hydrocarbons, preservation/failure/destruction of petroleum systems).

Academic level knowledge and applied competences to gather, interpret and rank petroleum systems using the building block approach. Specific focus on processes and systemic thinking concerning:

  • the context of primary depositional environment, its fundamental controls on global, regional and local scale and importance for the stratal building blocks.
  • using systemically relevant geogenic alteration factors with positive and/or negative consequences on the reservoir properties and their economic relevance.
  • executing analysis, interpretation and assessment of pore fluids with respect to their geo-heritage, composition and phase and economic value
