The students will solve a 3D protein structure by the method of protein crystallography, starting with an existing X-ray diffraction dataset. The students will have installed the necessary software on their own computers and will have independently followed the steps from these raw data to processed data, solved the phase problem by molecular replacement and then refined the initial model to a quality sufficient for deposition in the protein data base.

After completion of the course students will have aquired the basic theoretical concepts of protein crystallography. The will have explored the information content of the experimental data, the general strategies for computational processing of these data, and the steps needed to reach a structural model of the protein of interest. They will have aquired the competence to judge the quality of a structural model deposited in the PDB structural database (solved with Xray crystallography).
