Welcome to the course "Numerical Simulation in Geotechnics and Tunneling - part II: Numerical Simulation in Tunneling"!

This course provides an overview of the most important aspects of realistic numerical simulations of tunnel excavation using the Finite Element Method including staged excavation processes and support measures. This encompasses material modeling, discretization in space and time and the evaluation of numerical results. In the framework of the exercises nonlinear numerical analyses in tunneling will be performed by the participants in autonomous teamwork in the computer lab.

The course "Numerical Simulation in Tunneling" is the part II of the module "Numerical Simulation in Geotechnics and Tunneling".


Zunächst werden grundsätzliche Aspekte der numerischen Modellierung von Tunnelbauproblemen erläutert. Anhand der Modellierung eines Tunnelvortriebs in 3D werden dann die praktische Anwendung von FE-Softwareumgebungen und die automatisierte, parametergesteuerte Erzeugung von komplexen Modellen erlernt.
