This course examines the law governing the international sales of goods, primarily as regulated by the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG).  The CISG has been adopted by 93 countries to date and potentially governs between 70 and 80 percent of world trade in goods.  By almost any measure it is the most important international treaty dealing with commercial law.  Given its potential applicability to international sale of goods contracts, a working knowledge of the CISG and its application is useful.  At the same time, a theoretical understanding of the CISG’s provisions helps evaluate their impact on the performance and enforcement of contracts.
