In the lecture, methods for the design of technical systems are presented and demonstrated using examples of the design of chemical-pharmaceutical plants. The main steps of a design methodology for technical processes (or products) include synthesis of the process structure, optimization of the process parameters, detection of system synergies and realization of agile solutions. The design methods have to lead to technically optimized processes, but also take into account future changes in technologies, raw materials/energies and competitors. The main characteristics of a successful design methodology are thinking in scenarios, finding creative design solutions and avoiding misjudgements.
This course illustrates the key elements of a design methodology that leads to
economic and sustainable process designs.
